What to Look For in a Corporate Investigation Company

private investigation company
April 13, 2020 Guard Services

When an in-house legal or HR team engages a private investigation company, it’s because they have a problem you’re not sure how to solve. They are putting trust in the corporate investigators to determine how bad the problem is, and to determine which specific types of activities are needed to get the information, such as surveillance or financial auditing.

Here’s a typical scenario in which an in-house legal or HR team might engage a corporate investigator:

A major high-tech firm in the Bay Area discovers that some of its intellectual property has been leaked to a competitor. In investigating the situation, the company discovers that the leak most likely occurred just days before one of its senior engineers quit the company. This engineer now works for the competitor.

The whole situation is highly suspicious—but before the corporate legal or HR team can move forward with a criminal case, they need additional evidence. So they call in a private investigation company.

Quality Corporate Investigation Relies on Experience and Expertise

A high-quality private investigation company will employ only experienced ex-law enforcement officers who have served on investigative task forces at the federal, state, or city levels—all of which will have prepared them to collect evidence after a crime. They will begin by thoroughly interviewing the corporate legal and HR staff members, as well as any other corporate stakeholders who are close to the situation. The investigators will then begin exploring the case to find evidence.

At the very minimum, an experienced and reputable private investigation company will have a reach far beyond its own staff. When at any point in its research the agency is delving into a specific area in which it doesn’t have the right background and experience to work effectively, it should be able to use its extensive network of affiliated professionals to find someone who can come in on a consulting basis and provide expert assistance.

No matter what the nature of your case may be, the goal of the private investigation company you work with should be simple: to leave you with actionable information. You should then be able to make an informed decision on how to move forward with your case, based on all the information provided to you. For example, in an embezzlement case, it should have access to a financial investigator to help you pore over profit and loss statements. Or, if your case involves wrongdoing in the biomedical arena, they should find you an investigator with this specific kind of expertise.
